You have always known that old age would eventually be part of your life. Although you might be making light of the aging process in public, you might be struggling with growing older. If that's the case, from things you can do yourself to arranging for adult counseling services, here are some ideas that might help you.
Things You Can Do Yourself
Perhaps part of your problem is in watching your spouse grow older. That might be especially true if you have known him or her since he or she was very young. If that's the case, think of things you used to do that you can still do today. For example, maybe your body won't let you go water skiing anymore, but that doesn't mean that you can't still go to the beach to walk on the sand get your feet wet together. Maybe your financial state prohibits going to expensive movies. But, that doesn't mean that you can't plan fun movie nights at home, complete with pop corn and your favorite soda.
Maybe part of the problem is that you are downright bored. Consider taking a class on a skill you've always wanted to acquire, such as how to speak a new language or how to paint with watercolors. Find out if there's a senior citizen center in your area that offers classes, or find out if your local library has free classes.
Arrange For Adult Counseling
Maybe you've tried many things to make yourself feel happier, but you still find yourself crying often. Maybe you can't even listen to your favorite songs because they make you melancholy. If this is the case, then it might be time for you to see a professional who does adult counseling.
Do you attend church? If so, it might be that your ecclesiastic leader has the skills to counsel you himself or herself. If he or she doesn't, then the name of a counselor can probably be provided. Your family doctor will also be happy to give you names of counselors who can help you with your depression.
Once you go to the counselor, don't be surprised if you have to fill out questionnaires like the ones you filled out at your family practice office. The first session with the counselor might just be a getting-to-know-each-other session. Open your heart and be totally frank with your feelings about growing older. The counselor will have the training and the experience to know how to help you go forward with greater peace of mind and in a happier state.
